The seer stands on the black beach - every day, in every weather… even at night, sometimes.
She divines from the waves. Once, upon the eve of battle, the wind whisked up white horses towards her.
The kingdom went on to win that war.
Her people say she walks in a dream, yet still they come to her for guidance, and her care.
‘Listen to your ocean,’ this seer says.
She feels the boom of the water rolling into shore - first within her ears and feet, then a thrum throughout her body.
She hears its swirling knowledge.
She shares its love.

…and a big welcome to new followers and subscribers!
The Eyrie is… somewhat under construction. I’ve only been here for six months - but the six-month mark is the perfect time to settle on Substack, get clear on what your publication is here to do.
The Eyrie is still a weekly storytelling escape. Currently, I'm working more on the ‘Exploring’ part. Watch this space!
To today’s fiction, then: how do we all feel about tarot cards? This fantasy drabble is based on one of them - I met up with a friend, who showed me some of the decks you can buy. They had gorgeous artwork.
She also sent me to her favourite YouTube reading. If there’s any accuracy involved, only time will tell - but my creative side is loving the characters, stories, and symbolism of it all.
For example, cups correspond to the suit of hearts in a standard deck of cards - but cups govern the realms of emotions, intuition, water, and (a bit randomly, maybe) the clergy.
It makes for a very different Queen of Hearts than the most famous version (from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland).
That’s nonsense literature, though - not quite the same genre as fantasy.

The beautiful game
