‘Ah yes,’ said the Two-horned Unicorn, chuckling, regaining its usual breath. ‘Yes, I know what the fables say, and they're correct: one has to move towards one's luck, after all.’
‘But you just said-’
‘It requires both of us,’ the equine interjected. ‘You need good fortune, and a Fortunicorn needs to eat.’
It launched into an explanation like the one it had given Alanah.
‘...and why do I exist?’ it finished. ‘Well, some folk try their hardest - do everything they possibly can - and still they don't see an improvement.’
Princess Garnet nodded slowly. ‘Yes,’ she said, ‘I can imagine that.’
Thanks for reading!
I'm a big fan of balance - partly because mine has always been a little off…
Take Substack, for example. I struggle with Notes. There's something about this particular… design of social media that disagrees with my brain. I can all too easily spend literally hours scrolling, find that I feel awful afterwards, then completely avoid whichever website it is - for ages.
Neither approach is productive. I need to dedicate a particular amount of time to Notes -
has one suggestion - and be strict about it.Like, regimentally strict. I'm making a timetable, and setting alarms. Better time management, here I come!
Anyway, back to balance. Gaining success through good luck (without working for it) could feel unearned; working for it (without experiencing the good luck needed to go forward)… this gets demoralising.
I believe you need a bit of both. What are your thoughts, readers?
Join the Funnies and Thornies!
This is my fourteenth early entry to the ‘Thorny Thursday’ love and romance collection, curated by Kathrine Elaine and The Brothers Krynn . It also verges on Addam Ledamyen ’s ‘Funny Sunday’ celebration - there’s my hapless social media management, and the Fortunicorn itself gets quirkier every time I write it.
Readers and writers within these two collections include:
Accidental Monster Josh Tatter David Perlmutter Writer Pilgrim by So Elite A.C. Cargill, Author Bryan Pirolli Sharron Bassano
…among many more!

Thank you for the shoutout.
I totally understand your struggles with Notes! I'm bad at keeping socializing up and I definitely also need more discipline at it😂
