The Fortunicorn (8)
A romantasy in drabbles
Princess Deirdre dreaded to think.
She turned away from the cascade, and - ah...
There, on the other side of the pool, a little way downstream, the Two-horned Unicorn was stooping to the water.
Right. Just as she'd thought: even magical creatures need to drink, eventually.
Deirdre wandered by the water until she reached a place where she could face the Two-horned Unicorn - the Twonicorn, she reminded herself. It lapped away at the liquid…
Princess Deirdre forced herself to be politer, this time. She waited - but only for a pause in the creature's drinking.
She still made the first move: 'Enchanté.’
Thanks for reading!
Oh dear, oh dear.
Substack’s image generator did not like any variation of ‘(two-horned) unicorn drinking from a forest pool’ as a prompt. One offering involved disembodied tails, fluttering about like fairies and butterflies, leaving rainbow trails!
Fun, yes - but not what I was looking for. In the end, I just picked my favourite, hilarious image from the strange lot: why is the unicorn hiding so deeply in the water?!
You can really see where the idea of unicorns may have come from, here: the narwhal, a real-life sea creature. (Another candidate is the rhinoceros.)
Again, I don’t have a lot of time, today, but I promise to sort out links in each post to the first/previous/next parts of this story… sometime this March.
